Well so far I have watched 2 episodes of this show and I am not impressed. First of all they put a FBI agent in the show as a main character. I am so tired of cops/detectives/agents and other authority enforcement characters in books, movies and TV. It's lazy writing. It makes it really easy to introduce conflict in every episode where your main character is one whose job it is to investigate/solve/pursue/whatever criminals or the like. I am just bored to death with that dynamic. for most this wont be a problem but for me it's a pet peeve. The shows pacing and structure is standard tv drama formulatic swill. Obviously a move to attract the largest amount of people that a sci-fi show might otherwise put off.
The second lead is a priest. Please spare me anything doing with religion. However, with this show's concept that had an opportunity to address peoples faith and what the appearance of aliens would do to that. Obviously there is no place in religion for aliens. The priest could have had a crisis of faith when the Aliens showed up as he tried to rectify scripture in the face of aliens. However, this whole dynamic was swept under the rug with a short conversation. Basically, according to the show the vatican issued a statement saying that all creatures, including aliens, were god's creatures. (oddly in real life the Vatican's top astronomer has claimed aliens could exist and that this does not conflict with religious beliefs. Nov12,2009) So any interesting conflict with that is now gone.
The Visitors have also apparently been on the planet for at least 7 years...making it so that the resistance is already in place as well as fifth column members...no story development there needed. I didn't care for this decision. I understand it was probably to facilitate conflict in the show and that would have been fine if they had done something with it. So far the first two episodes have been boooooring. Im gonna give this show one maybe, maaaaybe 2 more episodes and then Im gonna drop it.
